About Us

Progressive Fire Fighters Association of Washington DC is an association of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters, aware of the increased complexity of our problems, and those of our Brothers and Sisters in the city of Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan area, feel compelled as an organization to study and solve such problems and to take our place in the vanguard of civilization, by cultivating and maintaining professional competence among Firefighters, establishing unity, love and brotherhood among our present members and keeping in mind the interest of retired members for the avowed purpose of improving the social status of our race and increasing professional efficiency.

The name of this organization is the PROGRESSIVE FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION – A member of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters, hereafter referred to in these articles as the IABPFF.

The purpose of the Progressive Firefighters Association are:

  • To promote the purposes and aims of the IABPFF which are:
    1. To create a liaison between our Black Brothers and Sisters across the nation, to collect and evaluate data on all deleterious conditions incumbent in all areas where minorities exist, and to compile information concerning the injustices that exist in the working conditions in the Fire Service, and implement action to correct them.
    2. To promote interracial progress throughout the Fire Service; and to see that competent Blacks are recruited and employed as firefighters, wherever they reside, and to aid in motivating our Black Brothers and Sisters to seek advancement to elevated ranks throughout the Fire Service.
  • To promote the interest of the IABPF within the District of Columbia and Metropolitan area.
  • To create a public opinion favorable to the interest of Blacks and minority firefighters.

The association exists as an un-incorporated membership organization. It’s “articles of organization” comprise the Constitution and the Bylaws, as from time to time amended, and its articles of association, if any. In the absence of separate articles of association, the Constitution and Bylaws shall be deemed to be the articles of organization. In the event of any conflict between the Constitution and Bylaws and the articles of association, the Constitution and Bylaws shall govern.
